Picking up bags at DIA

This was one of the best trips I've ever been on - definitely the best ski trip I've taken. I heard a lot of the same comments from the other guys. It was a lot of fun keeping up the blog and letting everyone in a little on what we were up to. Hope you enjoyed. I went back and added some more video and photo posts if you're interested. I'd start from the beginning. See you all later.

Getting Rid of All Our Change at Narita Airport

A Little Shopping Downtown

This narrow road was packed with people and small shops. Pretty fun for doing some people watching and a good place to grab a crepe.

Nakatomi Tower - Tokyo

A picture of the crew, sans John, here in Tokyo along with Masa - a former teammate of John's from the CU ski team back in the day.

Downtown Tokyo

On the main boulevard. Traffic isn't that bad in Tokyo since the public transportation system is so well laid out.

John's Song

Here's John doing his best Robbie K. impersonation during the hour he wasn't asleep. It does kind of look like he's laying down though, doesn't it?

Guitar Hero

Karaoke bars aren't just for singers. After a lot of sake and Sapporo's this can even happen to you.

We're In Tokyo!

These private karaoke rooms are a lot of fun. Here's Matt singing his favorite Bon Jovi tune in the Purple Room. We thought we were going to be at this place for only an hour but we ended up staying another four. John slept for two of them.

Round Beard

The Japanese have a great sense of humor as can be seen in this post from Niseko. This was a picture taken from our last night in the resort town. We were all sad to leave but now we are in Tokyo and are having a great time. Took a little while to get internet access.

I'm Moving Here

Sapporo vending machines? So this is what heaven is like.

WARNING - Experts Only

Nice signs - What? Which way do we go?

Holly Maholly - The sun came out for a bit

Matt-E boy struts his stuff on the two banger. Best lift of the day. Mt. Yotei, the Volcanic Mountain in the background.

More from our hike in

No map, no signs, no beacons, no probes, no shovels, no water, no preperation, but lots of love = fun times near ridgemont high.

Ready to Party - Dos

D hasn't stayed up much longer than Millhouse. Here he is at 6:31 just past Millhouse's bedy-by-time.

Ready To Party

The jetlag has been relatively mild on this trip but Millhouse still hasn't stayed awake past 6:30. Here's a picture of the room he has been assigned. He lost his luggage on the flight out so he has been without his Hannah Montana pj's and binky.

We'd Totally Do It Again

Despite taking the longcut, faceshots like this made it all worth it.

The Long Slog

Here's a picture of Matt before he completely lost it. We did 2 runs all day but that included about 43 traverses and 74 hikes. Matt had enough of that business. If you're not privy to recreational snow activities, traverses are a snowboarder's worst nightmare. The rare Japanese panda bear we came across paid a hefty price at the hand of the Hock. Wait, is that a Japanese or Chinese panda? Whatever, man! It's dead anyway.

Day 5 - Pic 9 - Epic Journey

Found the cat track, just one more little diddy and the lifts are all ours. Yeeha, Jesters dead!

Day 5 - Pic 8 - Epic Journey

A little further, but not nearly far enough.

Day 5 - Pic 7 - Epic Journey

This way guys follow me.....don't miss the kicker.

Day 5 - Pic 6 - Epic Journey

Which way do we go. One wrong left turn and we were a little farther from the lifts than we hoped. Luckily Matt-E boy found a guide and got some invaluable directions. Now its only a 2 hour slodge back to the resort....no big deal.

Day 5 - Pic 5 - Epic Journey

The top of the world with everyone else. Careful though too far left and the hike out could be longer than necessary

Day 5 - Pic 4 - Epic Journey

The final climb and we are there, the top.

Day 5 - Pic 3- Epic Journey

Getting closer to the top of the world on the single banger. Todd and I have now experienced it all......but after getting back to the condo we have some new goals in mind.

Day 5 - Pic 2 - Epic Journey

That way my friends....let's follow the crowd.

Day 5 - Pic 1 - Epic Journey

Darin starting out our backside journey in the gondola.

Miller's Corner 2

You can ski here everyday from 8 am 'til 9 pm. This footage was shot during our 1st night excursion. The temperatures were decent and the snow was great as usual.

Arigato!!!

We all appreciate the stroke of luck we've had since being here. This storm that has blanketed our island for the past 4 days closed down the Chitose airport for over a day just after we arrived here. Somehow we all managed to arrive in time for the best part of the ski season without incident and have enjoyed countless memorable experiences together. What a great trip!!

Day 4 Ski Report

We had the best day of skiing yet with a foot to a foot and a half of the fresh stuff. You're probably pretty sick of hearing about all of the new snow we've been enjoying out here. The crazy thing is that a local around these parts told us today that the snowfall is down from what he's used to seeing.

Occasionally There is Sunshine

The weather cleared up long enough for us to see the nearby volcano called Mt. Yotei. It only lasted about 10 minutes before the snow moved back in.

Nothing better to do

No room on the couch for Millhouse. His catlike agility couldn't save his watchband though.

Trees at Night

Not quite the quality post you would get from our tag along pro, but a good one none the less.

T-bone this one is for you

Snapshot of 1st day

Needed to give everyone a taste of the Niseko powder.

Someday day Darin will get the "pro" video on here....

Oodles and Oodles of Noodles, You Know.

Taken at our favorite noodle shack a few hundred yards up the hill from our condo.

3-D Menu

If the menus weren't readable because of the language barrier, at least we could visualize what we were about to order with the help of these plastic dishes. The food was great. We ate at a noodle shack on the mountain at least once a day.

El Groupo

I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys to do this trip with. Everybody has been so easy going and laid back. That is, except for Todd. We switched his Folgers Classic Blend with decaf and he went off all day like a possessed maniac. I've marked this experiment up as a failure and will not pursue further results with Group B.

More Anapuri, Please!

Arguably, our best powder day was at the Anapuri resort so I've included another clip.

Some of the Goods

Where'd Who Go?

It seriously hasn't stopped snowing since we've been here! There have been 1 or 2 minute periods of calm weather every now and then but they have been followed immediately by heavy snowshowers and a lot of wind. The wind has been an issue the past 2 days. It has closed down the upper lifts and relegated us to skiing the lower runs. However, as I've mentioned before we have still been skiing nothing but powder runs the whole time. This place is truly amazing!

Spoiled Americanos

We blindly chose our accomodations on the interwebs last September but things seemed to have worked out well. The walk to the gondola is less than 5 minutes and it's just a little longer to the local 7-Eleven where we have just about everything we need for sustanance and more. I think I'm going to move here. Here we are arriving at our condo after a long day of skiing.

We finally found Wild Bill's!!

Todd + Trees = TreeTodd

Todd loves trees. Trees love Todd. If Todd could be a tree, he would be a Christmas Tree because of his love for tinsel and snow sculptures.

John on the Board

John pulling the now, infamous inverted L-move.

Day 2 Summary - Miller's Corner

These Trees Must Be Cold

For a day that started out with the main gondola closed due to high winds, we were surprised at the endless runs of untracked powder. Matt sure looks smooth in the Japanese Assssspens. All this powder is a snowboarder's fantasy. Matt also has fantasies of pink unicorns and seas of fluffy pillows.

Millhouse's favorite food is Pow Pow!!!

Breakfast of Champions

We managed to find a great breakfast joint at an amazing little pastry kitchen. It has been hard to not buy just about 1 of everything when we go through. The service here is outstanding! You get the feeling the staff genuinely appreciates your business no matter how insignificant a purchase you make. This is important for people such as Mike who continues to eat like a bird. I think he's on the Olsen diet but it's hard to say. The handbags and lipstick might be the deal closer, however.

There Seems To Be Snow in These Parts

So far this beard has paid off for me. Despite its functionality, I'm actually looking forward to shaving for once. Stats for the day: 22,000 vertical feet, 11 runs, countless face shots, and 0 bumps. Things are going well for this group.

Reaction from 1st Run

The snow has met all of our expectations. Not sure how many times we've had to explain why we would travel half-way across the globe to ski in Japan when we (especially the Colorado contingency) can easily find good stuff close to home. Well, it's cuz this region gets 700+ inches of the best snow annually. We've all agreed that we could leave tomorrow after traveling 26 hours to get here and skiing only 1 day and it all would have been worth it.

Snow Mounds

Another good sign that the snow is going to be a plenty.

No Rest Stops

Those Banquets went right through us. Snows looking good though, eh!? It hasn't stopped snowing since we've been here.

Double Fisting Coors Travelers

Todd was kind enough to pack a few Banquets in his ski bag for the road. Our driver didn't seem to mind the rowdiness.

Shuttling In

Taxi Bus to Niseko Resort

This diesel Toyota mini-bus was 4-wheel drive and had plenty of room for all of our gear. It was a good thing because the drive up was through some windy narrow roads covered in unplowed snow with more snow piling on. Everyone was driving on the wrong side of the road too, by the way.

You Boys Ready To Rock!?

Mike is full of anticipation here at the Sapporo airport.

John and Matt made it from Detroit!!

They arrived at the gate for the Narita-Sapporo flight with 1 minute to spare. Plenty of time to shotgun a Sapporo before boarding our flight.
Todd, chilling at the Narita airport after a Sapporo and some udon noodles.

IMG00047.jpg

Here's Miller on the plane to Tokyo from San Francisco. The flight was uneventful.

Stuck in Detroit

Fellas, John and I won't be there until Thursday afternoon, won"t make our connecting flight from Tokyo on Wednesday. Have fun in the Powder.

Leaving Denver

Flight out of Denver went off without a hitch.

Meet the Crew - Matt

Matt has been looking forward to this trip ever since he saw the movie Lost in Translation. It has been his lifelong dream to be in a series of Japanese scotch advertisements. "For relaxing times, make it Suntory time."

Meet the Crew - Darin

This is Darin. This is his blog. I'm writing about Darin because Darin can't write about himself.

The funny thing is, I don't really know what to write.

Darin likes animals, the beer, and hugs. So if you see him, hug him, talk about animals, and maybe share your beer.

(Damon. Writing about Darin, for Darin.)

Meet the Crew - Millhouse

Mike M. (a.k.a. Millhouse) - This will be Mike's 2nd trip out of the United States. Hopefully the natives will appreciate his silly American humor more than the Germans did at Oktoberfest.
